Inkheart

Finished Anansi Boys and started Inkheart. Figured I'd get it read before the movie comes out. It's a thick book, but a young adult book so I should be able to read it pretty quickly. So far it has my attention. It was hard to put it down last night and I only did so cuz it was 2:23am.

Nebula awards

End of Anansi

I'm just a few pages from being done with Anansi Boys. It read so fast. So that's Iron Kissed and Anansi that I've read this week.

Iron Kissed had a twist I didn't expect. I do enjoy it when authors aren't afraid of having really awful things happen to their main characters. I have always felt that it certainly allows for more interesting stories.

I should read more Neil Gaiman. Anansi Boys and Neverwhere both dealth with characters who's life had been usurped. I wonder if this is a recurring theme for him. I think American Gods should be next on my Gaiman reading list.

After I finish Anansi boys, however, I think I might read the Stephen Baxter novel I have waiting, "Transcendent". Although, I should finish The Templar Legacy, I suppose.

Nova Swing

Finished Nova Swing by M. John Harrison today. I loved it. His prose is beautiful. He's not afraid to mess with his main characters. I think I need to try to find his earlier work.

Will read either Anansi Boys next or Engines of the God by McDevitt. Still reading The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry, too. Got Morgan's "Thirteen" going in the iPod now as I finished Neverwhere yesterday (completely enjoyed it). Funny to think I originally stayed away from Thirteen. I kept seeing the book and I'd read the back of it and then put it back. Not sure I like the narrator, though. Sometimes that british accent can really screw a word up. The guy couldn't pronounce "chirped" right. How hard is that?

Jonzing for: "The Scar" by China Mieville.

Read: George McDonald Fraser - Flashman series, McAuslan series, The Pyrates.

M. John Harrison

I finally finished "Variable Star" this weekend and began "Nova Swing" by M. John Harrison. I love Harrison's work of which I have read "Vericonium" and "Light". And I just found his blog so I will add the to my lists. His prose is wonderful - much like China Mieville. Dense and not like most Scifi. His language is simply enjoyable to read. Great descriptions, I find myself mentally "there", I can see everything and everyone (which is wonderful cuz it helps in the escape from reality). This book is of the sub-genre Event Site Fiction, which is fast becoming a favorite of mine. The classic of this genre being the Strugatsky's "Roadside Picnic".

Will probably have "Nova Swing" done in the next few days.

I bought books this weekend: Saving a Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan, Nova Swing by M. John Harrison, Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs, Engine of the Gods by Jack McDevitt, Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, and a few other odds and ends.
